You should rather perceive it as extremely time efficient!Nevertheless, this method mostly applies to predictable situations and/or reoccurring dilemmas.What about those decisions we really cannot or do not see coming?Well, this is where we introduce…Rule number two: Development of rules as a way of routinizing unpredictable decision making!When it comes to unpredictable events and decisions, we can again try to apply the first method and develop “crisis scenarios” or “crisis rules” but such strictly determined rules will not really do the trick.What we can do is develop abstract rules which are in line with are character, beliefs, ethics or our persona in general, hence, develop a kind of a behavioral pattern applicable to a wide range of scenarios.Let me explain this on a couple of examples.We may come up with a very general rule applicable to any unpredictable decision-making, such as: In a situation where I really need to decide, I will tend to go with an alternative which leaves me with more options.Or, when facing a concrete challenging situation and you cannot really decide how to react, you may use the “if…then” scenario.Let’s say you are having a situation at a work place where you are not sure whether and how to react to some (potentially unpleasant) comments made by another colleague.In this situation, you could avoid the complicated decision-making process by simply deciding you will react if this person makes a comment for the third time or start commenting on a specific point.Another example: Imagine you are shopping and are currently torn between buying one single, expensive thing and getting multiple, less expensive things for the price of this one.Well, we’ve all been here… I for one, have a very specific rule which prevents me from spending half of my salary on random things I’ll probably regret buying ten minutes later.I prefer buying expensive but high-quality shoes and jackets but tend to buy cheaper alternatives when it comes to t-shirts and pants.Again, this will probably sound familiar because, one way or another, we all have such or similar rules which help us deal with hundreds of common decisions daily.By developing such behavioral patterns you deal with common decisions automatically without even noticing you made a decision.And this saves you a lot of time and unnecessary distraction.Still, as good as this may sound, we are all aware that not every decision can be decided in a way of these two simple rules.There are obviously more complicated decisions which consume us for days, weeks or months and these cannot be decided by simply saying if…then.“Tough” decisions frequently require diligent thinking and weighing of pros and cons and the problem is that even that sometimes isn’t enough.We’ve all been there and you’ve probably experienced the following scenario already: You did the thinking, you tested your arguments and you know all pros and cons.But still cannot make up your mind… And this is where we turn to the rule number three…Rule number three: Set a clear time frame by important/tough decisions!And this means, set up a timer and meet the decision within this time frame regardless of how difficult this may be.It will still be very tough but being strict here will help you in the long run.Naturally, the time frame should not be ten minutes. Or it may as well be… The important thing is to decide to decide and follow up with this.Otherwise you may dwell in the limbo of your possibilities forever and this will consume a lot of your energy without providing for any actual results. If the decision remains impossible to make after a diligent analysis, consideration of all relevant data and comparison of all pros and cons, there is only one thing left for you to do.Set a timer and make the decision by the time deadline elapses.This literally means, set a particular date or even time and if you haven’t decided by this time already, force yourself to make a decision.And be strict with yourself! Remember, though decisions are the easiest to postpone but this postponing is usually doing you a lot more harm than good. Especially in the business context where procrastination may be actually be fatal and as a matter of fact, this decision-making method has been widely accepted and used by leaderships of big and successful companies.So you definitely shoul dn’t consider it reckless!And the good thing is that it can be used for pretty much every tough decision you may be facing. How do you feel about something? What is your immediate reaction when thinking about something?And even though we shouldn’t always trust our very first instincts (just remember your last impulsive reaction, those are rarely success stories!), it has been scientifically proven that best decisions are made by combining rational thinking with intuition.Scholars from the University of Leeds presented an interesting theory which states that intuitive decision-making is just a rapid calculation done unconsciously.This calculation bases on past experiences and subtle perceptions in our environment.This concept may, to some extent, explain why we sometimes have these completely unexplainable reactions as if our subconscious is t rying to communicate with us… Regardless of the definition of intuition, Hendriks believes that we should always listen to what our gut instinct is telling us and try to align our decision with that inner voice.Let us simplify this slightly abstract theory with the help of an example: You are currently torn between two choices, e.g. moving abroad or staying home. If the possibility of moving abroad arouses excitement and positive emotions, there may be a good chance that this actually is the right decision for you.In this particular example (as in many other real-life situations), you will most probably feel other emotions as well.You will surely experience slight anxiety, uncertainty and doubt and this is why you should ask yourself which emotion overrules them all.Test yourself with different questions: If I move, how will I feel in a month or year? How would I feel if I decided not to move? Would this decision ultimately arouse positive or negative emotions? Would you be reliev ed and happy to stay at home or miserable that you missed out on an opportunity?And after thorough consulting with yourself and your inner gut, make sure to decide in a way which ultimately makes you as happy as possible. Because that is the whole point, isn’t it?The third question is… What if there was no choice?In my opinion, this is a continuation of the second question… It is simply a helpful method for you to test yourself and your true emotions.Another way for you to check how a possible decision would ultimately make you feel. When torn between two choices, think about how you would feel if you didn’t have an alternative but would have to stick with one or the other.Let us say you are deciding whether to stay at your current job where you aren’t entirely satisfied or quit. What you should do is imagine both possible scenarios as if you had no other options.Imagine that this is the only job you can get and that, at the moment, there are no alternatives for you on the market.How does this make you feel?Are you relieved, frustrated, sad?And now imagine that your company is cutting off the service line you are working in, you are no longer needed and you need to find another job. The decision has been made for you. Be honest. How does this scenario make you feel?By imagining alternative extreme scenarios where you are not actually required to make a choice but are simply faced with a result, you may, in fact, realize how deciding in one way or another will make you feel.Furthermore, I personally find this method to be helpful for another, completely different reason.This kind of radical thinking may help you realize that absolute scenarios are actually very rare.Your decisions are rarely final and they usually only open doors for many other future choices and hence, decisions.This can be a helpful guiding thought when trying to avoid the anxiety of the decision-making because we do tend to forget we usually always have a choice.And I personally fi nd this to be a very comforting though indeed.Practical Tipp: Do your research, list pros and cons (preferably write them down)!Now, this one may seem obvious. The key point is that doing research does not only apply to business-related decisions.Naturally, the research you’ll have to conduct when deciding on the acquisition of another company will be more extensive than the research on hotel options you for your next trip.Still, the main point in both cases is to try to have as many valuable information as possible and to try to take all relevant points into account.Doing this can help you reach decisions faster, more efficient and will help you avoid potentially unpleasant consequences.Ever thought how reading reviews beforehand saved you a lot of trouble and helped you make a good decision? And vice versa. Ever visited a website only after you stayed at a certain hotel and saw two or three comments dealing with the exact problem you had? My point exactly.The second part of this advice would be to write pros and cons and I’m underlining write because having things written really does make a difference.Try pleading for both sides, figure out all relevant pro and con arguments and write them down somewhere.Which side prevails?And if there are clear arguments pro one side what is it that leaves you undecisive?The listing of pros and cons may help you with a thorough investigation of your feelings, wishes and hopes, hence again, help you to reach the “best” decision.And if it so happens that this practical tipp does not help and you are left with two equally long lists of pros and cons, hence, two equally good or bad choices, you need to go back to basics: set a deadline and decide by the time deadline elapses.You made the decision… Now what?Go with it! Align with it and do not look back! And this is the most crucial point of this article.Learn to live with every decision you make and cut the wining, crying, complaining or worrying.And let’s make it clear: this does not mean, put your legs up in the air and let go, especially not in business.You may and will frequently be required to follow up on your decisions, monitor the outcome and potentially adjust it.Yes exactly, you may need to adjust your decisions and make new or different ones. You may even have to get back and decide on the same thing all over again and this still won’t mean you made the wrong decision in the first place.It is important to note that the decision to decide already is a good decision.Sometimes, the right choice may not be obvious and you may even make a mistake.But isn’t a decision to cut the torture of the whole decision process a good move already? And speaking in business terms, it is not rare that you will be required to make a decision based on an incomplete data because not deciding would risk being to slow and facing even major losses.You usually create more playground for yourself in the future by deciding on your own terms and that is why a decision you made consciously usually puts you in the position of power.And even if the decision you made turns out to be imperfect, it is crucial to realize the importance of the alignment with the decision.Even if it turns out you made a mistake, you must remember that this was the best you could do at that given moment and there is nothing you can do about it now.And continuing to worry about the decision which has already been made… That is really no different to not deciding and worrying. How Perception Influences Motivation and Behavior within Organizations There are a lot of factors that affect a person’s behavior or that will influence their motivation. As leaders it is important to try and understand these underlining factors to be able to improve decision making and outcomes for the organization. Gandhi A bit of background about Gandhi Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known by as Gandhi, was born on october 2nd, 1848 in Porbander, Kathawar Agency, British India. Unfortunately, Gandhi died at an evening prayer meeting, by being shot 3 times in the chest on January 30th, 1948. This was done via an arranged childhood marriage since it was apart of the custom in religion. Gandhi’s mother and father was very important in his life. Even from an early age he was taught the customs and influences for his life. Some of the attitudes that were believed to help him through his adult life were vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification and mutual tolerance between individuals of different creed. He travelled to London to study law at university. He was influenced by a vow made to his mother to observe the Hindu percepts of abstinence from meat, alcohol and promiscuity. Going against his mothers will, Gandhi embraced vegetarianism and went onto him becoming part of a vegetarian society, and then on to becoming a teacher. His career of teaching was declined in India when he returned after look for part time work. This was his first taste to leadership and persuaded him to continue his leadership skills in a new way. Leadership Throughout Gandhi’s life he was thrown many obsticles, few of which some were discrimination, racism, injustice against Indian’s which started to question their status. This was some of the few things that influenced Gandhi to become the leader that he became. His first leadership role took place when he went to South Africa in 1893 to fight for his community and assist the Indians in opposing a bill to deny them the right to vote. He and his fellow Indian’s made many protests and signs but were suppressed by the South African government. Many of the Indian’s, including himself, were either jailed, flogged, or shot in the process. People may not agree whether or not he was an effective leader in this particular part of his career, but as the leader of the Indians, they hailed him for his courage and persistence with persuing his goals. The South African government finally compromised with Gandhi and ideas took shape. The concept of â€Å"satyagraha† (non- violent protest) matured. This was his first sort of achievement towards his leadership. The next thing he worked on was his role in Zulu War in 1906. He argued that Indians should support the war efforts in order to legitimise their claims to full citizenship. He kept arguing and persuing. Throughout this stage of his attempt to find better acceptance of Indian’s he has to prove himself as an effective leader, and show his skills. He had to motivate the fellow Indians and convince them to work together as a team in order to achieve their goal of being accepted instead of being seen as some of the lower level natives. Gandhi’s first major achievement as a leader came in 1918, with the Champaran agitation and Kheda Satyagraha. Supressed by the miltials of the landlords, the Indians were given, measly compensation leaving them in extreme poverty and devastating famine. Being the strong leader that Gandhi was, he couldn’t sit there and watch his country go down hill, he had to do something about it. He established an ashram, organizing scores of his veteran supporters and fresh volunteers form the region. He organized a detailed study and surveyed the villages accounting for the terrible counts of suffering, he began leading the clean-up of the villages, building brand new schools and hospitals helping those with alcoholism and poor health problems. All this was appreciated leadership towards his country, but his real main impact was when he was arrested on the charge of creating unrest and was ordered to leave the establishment. thousands of people protested outside the jail, police stations and courts demanding his release, which the court reluctantly granted†. It was during this time, that Gandhi was addressed by the people as Bapu (father) and Mahatma ( Great soul). After this Gandhi’s fame spread across the whole of the nation. Gandhi employed non-cooperation, non-violence and peaceful resistance as his â€Å"weapons† in the struggle against the British. During this time the civilians by British Troops caused deep trauma to the nation, leading to increased public anger and acts of violence. After this Gandhi’s mind ocused upon â€Å" obtaining complete self-government and control of the Indian government institutions, maturing soon into Swaraj or complete individual, spiritual, political independence†. With Gandhi as their leader, how could India not participate and be motivated? Gandhi was such a committed and heartful leader. If his goals were knocked down or failed he would find a way to start again or keep fighting. He always found a cause to help bring it back towards non violence, poverty and getting Indian’s accepted. All these battles were the obsticles and pathways to Gandhi’s leadership. As well as the many other steps he took until his final role of the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of the Indian communities. He was also involved in the Salt march, World War II and Quit India and Freedom Of India. These last three acts were the peak of his leadership and help the recognition of the Indians to realise what a great leader he was for their country. In the results of his efforts and achievements throughout this stage of his life Gandhi was able to achieve: at the end of the war, the British gave clear indications that power would be transferred to the Indians hands. And the Government rescinded its policy and made the payment to Pakistan, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh community leaders and assured him that they would announce no violence and call for peace. Sadly Ganhi’s life came to an end on January 30, 1948. He was walking towards his evening prayer meeting in front of a congregation of people when he was appoached by a Hindu named Nathuram Godse. Gandhi put his hands together in a traditional gesutre of greeting but this was when in violence Godse shot three bullets into Gandhi’s chest. There was a message after his death that went out to all the Indians about what a great leader he was and how inspirational he was to all them. Although our worldwide beloved Gandhi may be gone now, he will most definetly not be forgotten for what he did. He was an amazing cultural leader who believed very strongly in his country. He was recognised for his very different leadership styles and as a result he is officially honoured in India as a father of their nation. Leadership Styles Essay In studying the various leadership styles, I found that many, if not all of the styles we covered have some degree of relevance to most peoples leadership practices. A few however, seem to stand out from the rest. I will review these various styles individually. The leadership styles and approaches that will be focused upon are: the Trait Approach (Northouse 15), Skills Approach (Northouse 39), Style Approach (Northouse 69) and the Situational Approach (Northouse 89). I will discuss the five questions every leader should ask of themselves when engaging a team to achieve a goal. Lastly, I will look at emotional intelligence leadership skills, also referred to as EQ, (Northouse 23) . Trait Approach The Trait Approach to leadership implies that in order to be an effective leader, there are certain types of characteristics that you would have to be born with. These trait characteristics have been identified by several researchers. In my opinion, the list is so vast, one would be hard pressed to not find at least a few that they could associate with themselves. The ability to stand out among the masses appears to be a qualifier as well. There seem to be some consistent traits present in the leadership evaluations I conducted. They are: intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability (Northouse 19). While there is much controversy in regard to whether or not one must innately possess these traits, there seems to be an overall agreement that the presence of them make the difference when being considered to be or not to be an effective leader. The skills approach concept summizes that there needs to be the presence of three basic administrative skills-technical, human and conceptual. Technical skill relate specifically to knowledge and aptitude to to apply necessary techniques as well as operate specific equipment and software programs. Human skill is the ability to work cohesively with people. Having this skill and being effective at incorporating it into your leadership style is a critical factor to the success of any goal oriented group effort. If you cannot motivate people to complete the tasks at hand, failure would be imminent. The third administrative skill is the ability to be conceptual in your thinking. You must be able to see the big picture in order to be strategic. If one is unable to envision and embrace the overall concept, the company/organization will not succeed in meeting goals. Style Approach The Style Approach focuses primarily on behavior. Behavior in this regard is broken down into two areas. Task oriented and relationship oriented. An efficient leader finds a balance between the two. Having the ability to toggle between these two areas is only half the battle. A leader must also know when it is appropriate to apply one as opposed to the other. There may be circumstances while working toward one goal both practices need to be applied. A good leader should be able to determine when and how that should happen. This style is one that I can clearly relate to. I work in an industry in which a big part of our success lies in our ability to manage relationships. In order to do that, you must be able to determine the type of person you are partnering with and based upon that determination, you must adapt your approach and communication technique. Style questionnaire, Situational Approach The Situational Approach to leadership is one that I am quite familiar with however, it is one that I don’t necessarily think I embrace to the degree that I should. I find myself thinking that if a person has been hired to perform certain duties, there should be a core competency level present that enables them to complete the tasks they are assigned. I have always been opposed to micro-managing and the Situational Style of leadership felt similar to that practice. This leadership style calls for me to take who I am leading and what their abilities are and what degree of dircection I determine they would require to complete the tasks at hand without becoming frustrated by either lack of direction or lack of empowerment. If I had to equate it, I would say that it is similar to driving a stick shift. I need to know when to put my foot on the gas and when to push the clutch to get into gear. Five Leadership Questions As a leader, there are 5 questions one must ask oneself when engaging a team to achieve a goal. First, determine and take into consideration what is already working. There is an old saying if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. If there are tried and true practices and tactics that have led to achieving goals, and the goal itself has not changed, there is no need to re-create the wheel. Secondly, clarity is necessary in regard what variables drove the success. If you cannot pinpoint what varibles moved the dial, you cant give effective direction to a team in terms of the best path to take. Third, knowing the objective is necessary to answer the first two questions accurately. If the objective is fuzzy, there is no way to determine the best way to reach point of arrival. Fourth is defining the benfits of reaching goal for stakeholders. These include self-gratification, organizational profitability, bonuses, budget approval and respect of colleagues to name a few. The fiifh question that is necessary tto ask is what more can be done, what can be done better and what should be done differently to acheieve the highest level of success. Once this question is posed, empower and encourage the team to share their ideas. Brainstorming sessions are an invaluable forum for developing new concepts and approaches. It is the perfect setting for determining new approaches by providing a wide array of perspectives. Emotional Intelligence Theory Emotional Intelligence –EQ or Emotional Quotient is a behavioral model that manifests 5 key competencies. They consist of being in touch with and aware of your emotions, self-regulation by manging those emotions appropriately, being able to self-motivate, having empathy by being sensitive to the emotions of others and effectively managing relationships. In addition to having a basic awareness of these competencies, it is necessary for to know how to incoporate them into a leadership style. Professional integrity is very important and a good leader will always be mindful of controlling their emotions. An effective leader learns to step back for a moment and realize that they cannot change other peoples behaviors but they can change the way they react to them. I still hold fast to my professional opinion regarding what the I believe the best practices should be, however, learning and understanding how what drives people to do what they do, say what they say and lead like they lead is influenced by how they are â€Å"hard-wired†, has helped me to appreciate the perspective of others as well. Learning about the diversity of leadership styles has helped me appreciate the perspective of others even though they differ from mine.
